You Will Rock 2009 Because You Are Awesome!

Year end for some people is a time to celebrate achievements – goals attained, obstacles flattened – a new Audi lease.

The winners always seem to have everything go their way – just like senior year in high school (remember?). New high paying jobs, a brand new 3 bedroom loft condo, 13,000 Facebook fans, awards received, yada, yada, yada.

However, for many of my friends 2008 was a complete disaster, causing them to do what any self-respecting person does in the face of adversity: Curl up under a desk and weep.

Now, if you are one of the few who have proudly claimed the spot on the mantle for your winner’s cup, this post is not for you.  I do love you and we’ll talk about that love at another time.

This post is for my dear friends who have marched through the shit storm of 2008. This is for the folks who are single-handedly creating value for society with their struggling-but-lively non-profit.

In 2009 you will win. You will be on top.

Why should you win, you ask?

BECAUSE YOU ARE AWESOME!

1. You are awesome because you always put your relationships first.

you are awesome 250x223 You Will Rock 2009 Because You Are Awesome!

If you’re one of my friends running a small non-profit, you realize that it’s not about how many facebook fans you have. It’s about how many of those fans will stand up and fight for your cause. And they will stand up because of your personal relationship with them.

If you’re one of my Twitter friends, you’re awesome because you stand up and take action when action needs to be taken – like here, here and here.

2. You are awesome because because you do great work.

If you’re one of my Twitter friends, thanks for writing great posts on hump day, creating the best course on becoming an Authority Blogger, making the best WordPress theme money can buy, and giving us all 56 reasons to have more sex.

3. You are awesome because you do what is right.

You’ve taken the time to write posts that create value for others, knowing that you’ll receive nothing in return. You’ve written about personal struggles and the hopes you have, why we’re all broke and how to fix it, and have even reminding us why we shouldn’t throw monkey turd.

4. Finally, you are awesome because you are you!

You have already learned what works and what doesn’t.  You’ve screwed up thousands of times in your life and now you’re an expert on what you do well – and what you don’t do well. No one knows what you know. And there’s no MBA on earth that will teach you that – not even the MBA from Seth Godin, which, by the way, is now closed.

So, what will you do to kick ass in 2009?

  1. You will stop doing those things that have gotten you no results. Instead, you will do the opposite.
  2. bolt and rhino are awesome You Will Rock 2009 Because You Are Awesome! You will start doing things that are insanely remarkable – things no one will see coming. Not even your Mom!
  3. You will take time and read all those starred items in your RSS reader.
  4. You will smile more at those you love – and know them for the first time.
  5. You will remember that you are not your mistakes. Rather, you are what your friends love about you.
  6. You will tell the world when you feel down instead of hiding.
  7. You will spend more time with clients and friends – and not let their calls go to voice mail.
  8. You will close your laptop each day and go for a long walk outside in the fresh air.

Let’s hear it! What will you do?

Love your action plans, esp. #5. Have to remember how much I’ve made people laugh and smile -that is definitely a rockin’ trait :)

Yeah John!!! I love this time of year. I unlike many go into a cave (scorpion style)this time of year because I need to be still and quiet…so I can actually see what I have and have not done. For 2009, with this in mind I have decided rather than wait for the winter darkness to ponder my direction I will carve out time daily …ok weekly to be in the cave seeing where I am heading and where I want to go. It is delightful to make the the big yearly plan yet I so easily get side tracked with the busyness of life. Therefor I am committing to a weekly visitation to the Cave of Clarity so as to stay the course for the entire year. This feels big and difficult with all the other helpings on my plate and I know that without constant correction I will end up simply wandering wondering why I have not yet arrived.
Thanks for all the support John! People like you make life even with all its difficulties -delightful.
    Aloha~

Definitely going back to the gym this year, work on the blog some more, incorporate, and maybe develop an iPhone app or a game like I planned to do last year LoL! :)

Great post John! 2008 was a s**tstorm for many reasons, and my household managed to weather it pretty well. Of course, we planned ahead a little bit and when my wife got laid off I decided to start my own biz from home ahead of schedule. My own plans for 2009 include many of your own ideas, and I am looking forward to getting ahead, way ahead, this year – by helping as many others get ahead as I can.

One of my goals dovetails nicely with several on your list: I will produce more & analyze less. No more paralysis by analysis. Finish a task & not stress over which GTD tag it gets. Happy New Year.

  • Jackie

Thanks for the inspiration. I was just sitting here at my computer in a funk, reading job ads, and stressing about being laid off. Your email made my day.

Reflecting on impermanence every day and enjoying every moment of my precious human life with my precious husband and children. Doing everything in my power to continue looking for my friend, Lilly Aramburo and those responsible for her murder. 2009 will be the year for answers and justice.

    You’re crazy, but I love you. :-)

@Yogini – I’m sure you’ll have a victory for Lilly in 2009. Because victory means not giving up, you may have already won!

Amy – I love you too, my sweet little affliction.

John, thanks for the wonderfully inspiring post. Hard times break open hard shells. Then vulnerability and love and sweetness emerge. And posts like yours, to remind us of what really matters.

New Year’s hug to you. :-)

That was an awesome post. I feel honored to be a part of it, but more honored to have the pleasure of “knowing” you here in this often one-dimensional world of cyberspace.

I hope 2009 brings you all things great…and more!

    Hi John,

What a great and inspiring post. I was feeling a little bit end of the year blues. Been sick, thinking I haven’t done enough this year, blah. blah, blah and then found this and your words perked me right up!

OK. Now I’m fortified to go bravely into 2009, ready to kick some ass, keep my eyes on the prize of love and claim my awesomeness.

    Thanks John!

And Happy New Year to you!!

    Hi, John.

I am reading what you wrote on social media as a conversation between people. And welcoming one’s new followers on twitter, etc.

You reply to people in your own blog. That says a lot of you. Keep up with this good work. Kudos to you and here’s to a happy, successful 2009 for you and your readers!

@Brian – You too. One other thing I’ve found useful to re-boot my system is a very cold shower. Seriously – try it!

@Jackie – Anytime. Find someone who’s worse off than you. Call them and tell them how much they rock. Then go back to looking at the job boards.

@Rafael – Thanks! When folks visit my blog and take the time to comment it means a lot to me – really. It’s your time you’ve spent that you could have done a thousand other things with. How could I not reply?
