How Tyson Foods and Share Our Strength fight childhood hunger together

This past Monday I spoke at Share Our Strength‘s annual leadership conference in Washington, D.C.

When Jeff Weidner (@ShareStrength) originally invited me to present, he urged me to attend “Service Day”, where all attendees spend a few hours volunteering at food banks, shelters and local farms. I knew that by attending Service Day, I’d understand more about Share Our Strength than reading their big fat annual report (thankfully, Jeff didn’t require that of me).

After making friends with folks like Ed Nicholson (in the video below) and seeing how hard Share Our Strength has worked for 25 years, I saw that ending childhood hunger by 2015 is not a just dream, but an attainable goal.

  • Cool. BTW, there's some really intersting work going on in Boston in hunger relief. The Greater Boston Food Bank is one of the more progressive, innovative food banks in the country. Stacy Wong is a good communications contact there.
Dr. John Cook of Boston University School of Medicine is leading Children's HealthWatch, a nationwide study of the effects of hunger on children's mental, physical and congitive health. He has some remarkable--and sobering--findings that support a _business case_ for making sure kids don't go hungry. See http://bit.ly/3JMljB
We had the pleasure of working with Bob Collins and the Social Media Breakfast on a "comment for food" effort to support the Boston Food bank. It got incredible support.
I'd love to see the very powerful online community in Boston set an example for the rest of the country in creating community and awareness for the issue of hunger. If there's anything I can do to support it, please let me know.
  • It sounds like an excellent opportunity to pilot some ideas that Jeff
Weidner is cooking up (pardon the pun).

  • Hat's off to you, John for taking the time to come out and see some of what Share Our Strength is all about (and many thanks for this post! ). Wonderful meeting you, and truly enjoyed your presentation on Monday.
  • Ed - I enjoyed making the trip and plan on connecting locally with Operation Frontline.
