How to customize blog pages and posts with the Headway WordPress Theme

As you know, I’m a big fan of the Headway WordPress Theme (of which I am an affiliate).

Some of you have been asking me to demonstrate how flexible Headway is when adding content and/or HTML/PHP objects. In this video, I build a page in my blog using Headway to accomplish the following:

  • 0:00 – Copy content from a widget to create a custom footer.
  • 2:27 – Resize that footer to fit the dimensions of my website.
  • 3:28 – Add content from a specific post category.
  • 5:00 – Position and resize that block of content.
  • 5:45 – Add a custom image to all single post pages promoting a subscription to an email list.

The visual editor that you’ll see me use in a beta copy only meant for developers (the current release of the visual editor can be seen here).

So can you actually add a widget within the content leaf? Such as adsense widget from 3rd party after entry title. Been figuring out how to put custom ads within entries for headway because the widget ready theme I use now allow this. Thanks.
  • Yes - adding a widget leaf creates a new widget grouping in the backend of
    WordPress

Yes I can add widgets to widget sidebar leaf, but not the content leaf. There is apparaently no easy means to add a custom widget inside content leaf. Maybe something I've missed out. Will appreciate if you can elaborate
  • You can only add widgets to a widget leaf. Content is only for content that
you'll put in that specific leaf.
  • Hi John,
Great video. I've purchased headwaythemes yesterday and now I'm trying to find my way. Lot of great options. I'll need to view the video more often the see how you did build use the leaves for navigation.
  • You're welcome Jan. Use the forum too.
  • Hi John,

Can one split the header into two parts so that the logo can go in one and for example an advert can go in the other?

Or can the header be resized to create enough space to add another leaf to its right for the placement of an ad?
  • Yes - but CSS would be required...
  • Thanks John.

I guess I could place a borderless table with 2 columns in the header and make it work like that, right?

Not sure how to do it via CSS, unless someone can show me the code and I can amend to my requirements?
  • Yes - you can create two tables, but you will need CSS. It would be just a snippet of code that you can get from the forum (which rocks!)
  • Hey fella, thought you might like to know that whatever plug-in you're using for bookmarking (is it Sociable?), the Twitter one isn't ideal as it doesn't use a URL shortener. So, when I try to tweet this post, it has the whole URL and leaves me with -14 characters ;-)
  • Danny - thanks for pointing that out. I'm surprised that @sociable has not
    addressed this obvious issue!
  • Anytime, good sir :)
  • Very helpful videos, also like the openess saying you are an affliate, its wordpress quite ethical anyhow.

  • WordPress rocks.
  • I just watched this video now, John, as I was busy earlier today. You've just shown that in a miserly 5 minutes, you can completely alter your blog's look and feel, all without CSS. Hmmm.... raises questions about other premium themes where you can "do it yourself"... ;-)
  • Yup. Themes that claim to require no coding...

So, once you purchase a Headway license, are upgrades included? Will they be included in perpetuity (grandfathered)? I love a good value, and from what I've seen, Headway is the best value around. I'm looking for a little social proof to take me past my fugal tipping point.
  • You get free upgrades for life :)
  • Danny - thanks for stepping in here!
  • Anytime, man :)

You can add, resize, arrange and configure the leafs all at once then save. Maybe you already knew that, but it saves time :-)
  • Clay - I did not know that! Jeeze - thanks!
  • Thanks John for another awesome video on using Headway. The version of the Visual Editor is going to be in the 1.5.5 release. In fact, it will be available to the public in the next few days.
  • Great news, thanks!

Another great video about Headway... Thanks! I'm still working on a redesign of my site using Headway. Haven't had much time with the holiday season, but hope to have it ready to go sometime in early January!
  • Hi Jen! So glad your using Headway. Can't wait for the next #sosfood chat!
