I am an old-style person and I have to admit I first tried all the options I have several times, before I had to quit and admit social platforms are the new black. Twitter never tantalized me and I never taunted it, because there was a mutual respect - we are both small, but with a great mind. Now, when I saw that "Before we dive into Twitter, we need to get one thing straight: Size does not matter!" line, I laughed my arse off. Great post.

John, great tips. Here's a couple of mine on 'friends you haven't met yet'… I like to look at the person's stream to see what they have tweeted recently. If this is someone I want to connect with, I may retweet something, or comment using the @yourname mention. Typically this starts the dialogue which then becomes mutual follow. Tips for how you find these folks: I use Twittergrader, then look at the local audience to find local tweeps. I also like wefollow where Tweeps tag themselves.
Have to tell you though, the best part of your post is the “size doesn't matter”… I'm still chuckling!
