This is day 24 of the 31 Day Challenge To Optimize Your Blog With Social Media. Today, we’ll look at the business value of doing good.

Have you ever noticed that the best networkers seem to do a lot of charity work?

Like many WASPS, I was involved in boyscouts. The scout leader was Mr. Pertrazzio who was an electrician.

Now, I’m sure he loved being involved with the boyscouts. But when you think about it, he had a clear marketing advantage over other electricians: Parents trusted him. And some parents trusted him enough to let him into their homes, which is important for an electrician.

Three reasons why you should do charity work on your blog

  1. It shows you care about something greater.
  2. Your blog and your outposts have power to create awareness around important issues.
  3. You can meet new bloggers that you can network with.

Within your blog strategy, make a list of non-profits that you really care about (I blogged about KidsAreHeroes a few times). You can either reach out to them or hop onto existing social good campaigns like TweetsGiving and Blog Action Day.

What good have you done?

    Hi John,

Been really enjoying your blog series – I'm just wondering if this post could be fleshed out a little more?

Perhaps you could adise on setting up a dedicated charity page, that might show the charities a blogger supports. Or what plug-ins/widgets bloggers can use on their blog to raise awareness (think Kiva donation profile badge, for example). Or how to style your blog in the design of your supported charity. Or a Paypal donation option for folks that enjoy your blog and get value out, maybe they'd care to make a donation to your favourite charity as a thank you.

These are just some ideas; I'm sure there are some more. Just maybe give readers some cool options to look into a little more?

Cheers, and look forward to reading the rest of the series :)

    Danny.

You talked to me… Disqus = great potential…. reality = great issues. I pulled it off all my sites, especially my non-profits that are uber concerned with image. Nothing like a christian ministry site getting tons of porn spam. Disqus = Fail on that.
