How To Create A Custom URL For Your Facebook Page In 70 Seconds

During the TechSoup webinar on Facebook yesterday, one question that came up was about creating a custom URL for your Facebook Page.

There are three reasons to create a custom URL for your Facebook Page:

  1. It’s easy for supporters to remember.
  2. Creating the custom URL prevents someone else from registering it. And if someone else does register your brand, it may be costly to claim it as yours.
  3. Improve SEO – especially if you use keywords in the URL name. For example, facebook.com/greatburgers will be better than facebook.com/bobsgrill.

I am not sure why this is such a great thing? I did it, but I was expecting something more..am I missing something here??

  • Nope - just a shorted URL that is more likely to get written down when
someone sees it printed on brochures, flyers or direct mail pieces.
  • Nice, indexed pages for search. I am finding the same thing is true of my Linked In if that is any use to people. You can also link your website address to Twitter. If you want it all to go viral fo you today, instead of pearshaped.
  • Dara - Great point about LinkedIn.
  • Thanks for the tip. I just customized the url for the EMSEduCast podcast Facebook fan page to http://facebook.com/EMSEduCast
  • As always, great tip! :)
  • Thanks, Sue Anne!

I don't see my groups pages listed, can you not do this for groups?
  • Custom URLs are only for Profiles and Pages
  • I've heard that when the Facebook email system (Code name: Titan) is introduced your custom URL name will become your @email handle.

John, do you know if FB spiders the fan pages to look for keywords for their internal search?
  • Jeff - Yes, Facebook indexes Pages for search.
  • I will do it for my fan page too. Thanks for sharing this.
