Keeping up on blogging best practices is crucial to creating a successful blog for your nonprofit. And although a large part of the work I do is implementing blogs and developing blog strategies for nonprofits, I can’t be all things to all people. So I tell folks to subscribe to the blogs of my “competitors”.

The nonprofit blogger diet

Most likely, you already subscribe to a few blogs about nonprofit social media. The best ones include Selfish Giving, Midcourse Corrections, Community Organizer 2.0, Wild Apricot, SocialBrite, SocialFish, NTEN, Kivi’s blog, Katya’s blog, Amy’s blog… oh and Beth’s blog.

These blogs should be the substance of what you’re reading – your main course, if you like. But as with any diet, diversity is a key element for health.

Three sources of blogging tips I personally guarantee

Let me recommend these three sources of blogging tips, that you may not know about. I’ve been reading them all for a couple of years now.

Blog For Profit

bpfBlog For Profit, written by Grant Griffiths, is essentially a free online blogging manual. I give this one a 100% money back guarantee on learning. In fact, subscribe now and if you don’t get any value from it, I will send you a brand new shiny $10 bill to pay for your wasted time (try me).

Chris Garrett on New Media

chrisgarrettChris Garrett lives in the UK. He is one of the world’s most influential bloggers that you’ve never heard of. He co-wrote “Problogger”, the book that changed how businesses view blogs. He is incredibly modest, well-spoken (Duh, he’s English) and does a lot of work promoting nonprofits. This one get’s my money-back subscription guarantee as well.

Remarkablogger

remarkabloggerMichael is one of the smartest guys on the planet, or at least in Vermont. He can teach you how to increase subscribers, write content for your ideal customer, and how to manage the business of blogging. This one get’s a $20 money-back guarantee (I sent Michael an email about paying half. Hopefully he’ll get back to me).

What’s in your diet?

  • Amen John, although I don't see us as competitors at all. Actually, I think what we write compliments one another beautifully. You write some great stuff about social media and notprofits and I'm always learning from you. I'm one of your loyal fans! And, I follow those people you listed as weel.

Other blogs that are in my diet are Valeria Maltoni's Conversation Agent http://www.conversationagent.com/ who writes about marketing and social media. I also read your cohort in crime, Danny Brown who has conversations on emerging and social media tools http://dannybrown.me/.
  • Jeff - I don't see us a competitors either. The quotation marks are an
    attempt at sarcasm.
  • Wow, John. Talk about giving and sharing - another great sharing post. Thanks for the kind words, too.

Great recommendations for nonprofit blogs about social media and blogging. I haven't subscribed to Blog For Profit, so I'll definitely check it out now.

For nonprofit social media blogs, I'd have to add Socialbrite, http://www.socialbrite.org/, where you, Beth, Amy, and many other well-respected nonprofit social media thinkers blog. If I haven't been diligent about reading my RSS feed, I'll go there first to check out the pulse of social media.

For blogs about blogging, I think one of the best (and little known) is Social@Blogging Tracker by Ching Ya Wong, http://www.wchingya.com/. She always gives great blogging tips, generates interesting conversation about blogging trends and ideas, and is a great conversationalist.

Thanks for starting this conversation. I'll check back to read others' recommendations as well.
  • Thank you so much Debra for the kind mention. You are truly a selfless person who always supports others in various ways, someone who values the network, same like John.

I have subscribed to all of the blogs mentioned here (blogforprofit, just now). I would like to recommend SocialMediaExaminer (http://www.socialmediaexaminer.com) for social media related articles. Non-profit wise, no other than Community Organizer 2.0 (http://www.communityorganizer20.com/) for Debra is the one who introduced me to non-profit issues when we first met on Twitter a year ago. :) Also, in Tweetsgiving!

I do need to give credit to John for I have yet seen any video demonstration about blogging/social media as clearly done as John's, honestly. I came to know Dannybrown.me from John and that guy was generous enough to present me a winning gift of 'Crush It!' from a give-away! My husband and I love the book!

Gotta stop before I digress. Just so excited to have known all of your sites. Continue the wonderful work, don't stop.

    Social/Blogging Tracker
  • @wchingya - You completely rock!
  • Thanks for pointing out Social@Blogging!
  • John,

I subscribe to and read them all. You simply cannot go wrong with Grant, Chris and Michael.

Looks like you get to keep your hard earned dough!
