John, I've been telling clients to steer toward Facebook Pages rather than Groups. When would it be advantageous to create a Group when a Page offers the same benefits plus more functionality?

A Group would be good for orgs to plan campaigns and events with their core followers (in this case a secret group). A group could also be created around an issue (oil spill, haiti…), but is better if it comes from the ranks, not the org.

Think of Groups as a way for people to connect and organize together, and a Page as a way for an org to connect with it's supporters.

Groups are also really great if you have people that want to remain semi-anonymous. At my previous job, we created a group to allow foster parents to connect. It's not 100% “secure”, but its membership is also not as public as a page.

Another way we used groups is one of our auxiliary stores created a group to connect the volunteers that work there.

Sue Anne – I'm curious if you've ever used secret groups for anything.

Along the same lines as Sue Anne, while my non-profit has a page for our org we also have groups for parents of kids with heart defects to communicate with each other and share information in a more private space, as opposed to forcing them to have to do so on our wall.

        And are those secret groups?
