Why you don’t need to freak out about the impending Facebook Page changes (video)

Over the past day or so Facebook Page admins have been freaking about the impending changes to their Facebook Pages. People aren’t sure how to deal with the removal of the Boxes tab, and more importantly, how to even know if they have an issue with their custom tab widths.

Note: Sidebars created with Static FBML will also be removed. Page admins will have to be creative with how they use their info tab, and existing custom tabs (Read Bryan Person’s blog post with tips on how to adapt with no custom sidebars).

This video will show you how to deal with the Boxes tab and how to see if you need to resize your custom tab. As I mention at the end of the video, Inbound Zombie is happy to help resize custom tabs widths.

How Inbound Zombie can help

If you do need help, please email me at john@inboundzombie.com and put “FBML needs to be resized” in your subject line and a link to your Facebook Page in the message. We’ll reply with a quote.

I'm pretty calm about the whole thing because I've been designing for the 520px width since last Winter. Other people, however, are trying to stress me out over it ;-)

Another way to get rid of the Boxes tab (which might be easier if there are a lot of applications in the Boxes tab) is to delete the applications directly from within the Boxes tab itself.

Just click on the little pencil icon at the top right of each box and select “Remove Box.” Once all the applications are removed, just reload the page and the Boxes tab will be gone. Voila! :)

edit: I just realized that some applications can't be removed from the Boxes tab but only moved to the Wall (i.e. Favorite Pages). I just ran into this on one of the pages that I manage. I just moved it to the Wall (where it should have probably been anyway…oops). After the Boxes tab was clear, I reloaded the page and the tab disappeared.

That's why removing them in the edit mode works best.

But what if I want to *keep* the Favorite Pages “somewhere/ on my Fan page? They can only display as a box or under the box tab, right? There is no way to have them as a distinct, independent tab… so they are bound to disappear?
