The New Facebook Insights Explained in Plain Engish

facebook logo2 The New Facebook Insights Explained in Plain Engish
Two weeks ago, Facebook launched a completely new version of Facebook Page Insights along with several new metrics. Some of the new metrics include:

  • People Talking About This – This is the number of people that engage with your Page and includes users liking your Page, liked, commenting on or sharing a post from your Page, answered a Question you’ve asked on your Page, or tagged your Page in an update or in a photo. This also includes Facebook users who’ve responded to an event on your Page.
  • Friends of Fans – This is the total number of friends all your fans have.
  • Reach – The number of people who have seen content content associated with your Page (everything mentioned
  • Virality – The percent of people who saw a story from your Page and “talked about it”.

How to access Insights on your Facebook Page

You can access your Facebook page insights directly under your Facebook Page’s main image in the sidebar (FYI – this tab can only be viewed by Page admins).

When you click on the Insights icon, you’ll go directly to an overview of analytics for your Facebook page. You’ll also notice that three sub-tabs have appeared in the sidebar: “Fans”, “Reach” and “Talking About This”.

Making sense of your Page overview

The first tab you’ll see when you click on Insights is an overview of your Page. This tab shows you the day-to-day information you need to know as a page administrator.

What do those four numbers at the top mean?

media 1318184849604 The New Facebook Insights Explained in Plain Engish

These four numbers at the very top of this page are the most current snapshot of your page. Following is the definition for each number:

  • Total Likes – Total likes is simply the number of people who would like your Facebook page up until yesterday.
  • Friends of Fans – Friends of fans is the total number of friends that all of your Facebook fans have, taking mutual friends into account. This number is more useful if you are running a Facebook Sponsored Like Story because it would be the total number of people they could see that ad. The percent increase or decrease next to this number is a comparison with the previous 7-day period.
  • People Talking About This – This is the number of people that engage with your Page over the past 7 days and includes users liking your Page, liked, commenting on or sharing a post from your Page, answered a Question you’ve asked on your Page, or tagged your Page in an update or in a photo. This also includes Facebook users who’ve responded to an event on your Page. The percent increase or decrease next to this number is a comparison with the previous 7-day period.
  • Weekly Total Reach – This is the number of people who have seen any content associated with your Page (including any Ads or Sponsored Stories pointing to your Page) over the past 7 days . The percent increase or decrease next to this number is a comparison with the previous 7-day period.

Underneath these four numbers you’ll see a graph with rolling weekly numbers for “Talking About This” and “Weekly Total Reach” for the past month. You’ll also see dots for each day that you’ve posted to your page (dot size indicates the number of posts for that day).

What does the Page Posts information mean?

media 1318185793888 The New Facebook Insights Explained in Plain Engish

Under the graph you’ll see a spreadsheet of your most recent page updates, with information about how Facebook users engaged with that content. Each column can be sorted, and you can even filter by post type at the top left of this spreadsheet (click on “All Post Types” at the top right of the spreadsheet to filter).

Following is the definition for each column:

  • Date – The date that your post was published.
  • Post – The type of post (post, photo, video, link, platform post) and excerpt.
  • Reach – The number of people who saw that update, or the number of times that update was displayed.
  • Engaged Users – The number of people who have clicked anywhere on your Post.
  • Talking About This – The number of people who have created a story from your Post (see what this includes at the beginning of this article).
  • Virality – The number of people your post reached who “talked about it” (Talking about this divided by Reach).

When you click on each number in this report, a small chart will pop up with more detail. These will be covered later this week (subscribe so you don’t miss out!)

What do the “Fans”, “Reach” and “Talking About This tabs tell me?

  • The “Fans” tab displays the same type of information that was displayed in the old Facebook insights reports. You’ll see demographic info about your fans, how many people have liked your page, how many people have unlike your page, as well as a list of your top sources for fans.
  • The “Reach” tab shows you information about who saw any content about your Page. This will include both fans and nonfans.
  • The “Talking About This” tab shows you who create a story about your Page.

Thanks so much, I am always setting up “face book pages” for clients, then if they do not want to pay us to post and moniter the activity, we cannot guarentee the social media marketing will work. It is frustrating when it is a flop, and small biz doesn’t quite get it. I’m still trying to figure out why I need to set business up with twitter accounts? I’m constantly researching and experimenting, ahhh, I long for the days when we simply did radio and TV campaigns.
I appreciate that you are sharing your knowledge with us,

Hi Kathy…want to comment on setting up twitter accounts for biz…twitter followers are akin to stalkers they want the most up to date info about you, your company or brand. Twitter is also the most accurate form of “real” time marketing it measures how many total followers you have and how many are following you at the moment. My fav is when you have more followers currently than you have total….that’s your chance to convert those current followers into permanent followers. So you have 100 followers but at noon there are 150 convert those extra 50 by tweeting them to follow you. If you convert 50 new followers a day you would increase numbers which directly affect sales. Hope this helps.

  5. Emily Findley says:

Hi, I monitor a page and I also cannot see/use the new Facebook insights and I can’t activate it. I click on the link and a new page doesn’t show up. Is this a bug on my page or is there a different way to go about this? Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Log into your old insights. You should see a notification for the new ones.

  6. Elliot Margolies says:

I assume that “Reach” measures the number of times your post appeared on somebody’s news feed.  Would it count as a “Reach Unit” even if the reader never scrolled down as far as your particular post in his/her newsfeed?  I realize there’s no stat that can measure how many actual readers you had for a post.  I guess it’s somewhere between the “Engaged” and the “Reach” figures.  Is it recommended to make your posts go beyond the allotted space so really interested readers would have to click for “more?”  Are there any techniques you recommend for getting a better idea of how many folks actually read at least part of your post?

    1. John Haydon says:

Reach is the number of unique people that see your post. Impressions is the total number of times a post was displayed.

  8. Matt C. says:

I use FB Insights on a daily basis but I have not been able to find the exact definitions for the metrics on the Daily Likes Sources tab on the Page Level.  What exactly are profile_connect, api, recommended_pages, page_suggestions, timeline, external_connect, page_profile, hovercard, search, ticker, and like_story metrics?  What do they mean?

Also, I don’t understand the delta on the Key Metrics tab between my Daily Organic Reach and Daily Reach of Page Posts.  Is it possible to reach the same person Organically and Virally?  Shouldn’t my Organic Reach + Viral Reach = Total Reach, assuming my Paid Reach is 0?

Any help on these would be great.  Thanks.
