By now I’m sure you’re aware that profiles (what people use to connect to each other on Facebook) have a completely new layout called the Timeline. Briefly, the Timeline shifts the focus from a user’s most recent update, and instead focuses on important events in their life.

Ever since profiles have received this new layout, people what to know when pages will get a Timeline layout.

I say, don’t worry because it doesn’t matter much anyhow…

What will be awesome about the new Facebook Page layout

When Facebook Pages finally do get the timeline layout, there will be a few marketing advantages:

These are pretty awesome benefits, but even these benefits really don’t matter in the grand scheme of your Facebook strategy.

Why you should stop obsessing about when Facebook Pages with get the Timeline

The short answer is that everything happens in the newsfeed, NOT on your Facebook page. Your main job on Facebook is to keep people interested in your organization so that they spread the good word. Your tool for doing your job is the wall.

Now don’t get me wrong –  your branding is an important part of your overall marketing plan. It just doesn’t keep people interested.

We all like to be pretty and it’s easy to while away a good …while imagining how pretty your Facebook page will look with timeline. Imagining what amazing banner you’ll put at the top that will say everything about your non-profit in one picture….and then I wake up and smell the coffee and realise that I haven’t found that picture in any other media because it doesn’t exist. Then realise that yes, your right, it doesn’t matter. People will only ever care about that nice banner for about 2 seconds the first time they land on your page. They’ll scroll down and if the content is not doing it for them wave them goodbye, if they’re interested enough to click “like” then they’ll probably never visit your page again as all the info they need is coming direct to their wall….but we all like to be pretty, so I’ll still look forward to picking pictures!!

Ah, yes yes.  The key is, though.  To at least have your creative timeline cover photo ready when they roll out the page.  I suspect that the first organizations to implement their timelines may get some attention for doing so? Or do you think that will just be attention from other social media nerds, I mean marketers? ;-)

Timeline covers are actually better used to allow supporters to express their love for the org. Covers for Pages is a good idea, but remember that most users don’t visit Pages.

John, how do you find out about these new developments?! I write a blog that’s kind of like yours, but it’s specifically for animal welfare advocates. I am constantly getting questions about what’s coming next, and I find it through blogs like yours, Beth Kanter’s, etc. Where do YOU get your info? Are you connected with people at Facebook? Just really curious. Also because I have a pretty tough Facebook question that at least a dozen of my readers have asked me, and I can’t get any info from Facebook or anywhere else. Really love what you’re doing!

I use a few sources (blogs and people), plus monitor Google for instant updates on specific items.
