Stories are the heart and soul of your organization. They’re the thousands of tiny little living threads that connect your organization and your fans.
But stories are also the most tool you have to get people to take action!
What makes a good story?
Think about the thousands of stories throughout your organization and the dignity and hope they can bring out in others! Dignity and hope are feelings. And while people may not remember what you say, they will remember how you made them feel.
What Margaret Mitchell can teach you about storytelling
When you start developing your stories, think specifically about what made the last great movie you saw so powerful.
- It had an underdog that you personally identified with.
- There were plot points that had you crying, laughing and encouraged.
- There was a beginning, middle and end (conflict, challenge, resolution).
- There was a point where you thought the hero would lose everything.
- But they gained much more than anyone ever expected.
- And it may have even caused you to change your behavior.
The stories about your people are no different.

Appealing to emotions is one of the best ways to connect with an audience. It’s great to give news and updates, but if your nonprofit isn’t connecting on an emotional level, then people aren’t going to care what news you have.
