To the person who asked this question during a recent Charityhowto webinar:

I apologize for the useless answer. In retrospect, I now realize that you probably wanted a list of things every Facebook Page should have.

But even if your Page had all of those items, you could still have a resoundingly unsuccessful Page. So my answer was simple and direct:

A successful Facebook Page is one that is meeting or exceeding the specific goals for that Page.

Define success for your Facebook Page

If the goal of your Page is to triple the number of people talking about LGBT rights, and you’ve done that, your Page is a success. If the goal of your Page is to acquire 5,000 emails in three months, and you hit that goal, your Page is a success!

And don’t compare your Facebook Page to other Facebook Pages. You’ll only suffer.

  1. Excellent point. Without goals and measurable objectives that are unique to your organization, how can you ever know if the tool you’re using (whether it’s FB, Twitter, Pinterest, Viddy, LinkedIn, WordPress, press releases, or flying banners behind an airplane) is a success. I guess it’s natural to want to emulate what someone else is doing, especially if 1) you like it, 2) it makes sense, or 3) if someone else tells you that they are successful. But, if you don’t create your own plan, you’re just shooting in the dark.

    BTW: the Social Media Road Map booklet arrive earlier this week. It’s a quick read and has some great ideas for charting a social media course. Thanks for the suggestion.

  2. Great post John. As I’m working with different clients with their social media, I’m discovering that I should have set better goals with the client for their Pages. Great reminder here.

    Such an important point. Thank you, John.  Our goal is to drive traffic from facebook to our website.  Do you know of a way from Google Analytics to identify traffic that comes via the fan page and our posts, as opposed to people “LIKING” articles from our site or even the Facebook social plugin we use that is on our site, but I THINK counts as referral from FB on Google Analytics. thanks

  6. John, thank you; great observation & reminder that what works for 1 business/nonprofit may not work for another organization. We had created a plan before setting up any of our social media pages. IMHO, it wouldn’t make sense to not have a plan or goal in place and hopefully clarifies to Board members why we would want be on Facebook in the first place.
