5 Nonprofits that Newsjacked Facebook During the Oscars

Did you watch the Oscars last night?

During commercials, did you scan your Facebook News Feed to see what your friends were saying?

The Oscars trended on Facebook, and Ellen Degeneres broke Twitter with her selfie.

Newsjacking the Oscars

Newsjacking is the art and science of injecting your ideas into a breaking news story and generating tons of media coverage and social media engagement.

  • It’s a science because you use technology to monitor trending topics.
  • It’s an art because you have to weave your story around that topic.

Sometimes a trending story is directly related to your community. Sometimes a trending story has nothing to do with your community, but everyone is talking about it. Like the Academy Awards.

Here are five nonprofits that creatively weaved their stories into Oscar night:

oscar night - Habitat for Humanity

oscar night - AARP

oscar night - museum of science

oscar night - alexs lemenade stand
